All other commercial substitute feeding options differ markedly from it. Breast milk is easily digested and contains antibodies that can protect infants from bacterial and viral infections. The health benefits to mothers include lower rates of certain breast and ovarian cancers.

Regardless of the superiority of human milk against all other infant feeding options, health professionals agree that there are rare exceptions when human milk is not recommended. Breastfeeding is not advisable if one or more of the following conditions is true:

* The infant is diagnosed with galactosemia (a rare genetic metabolic disorder)

* The infant whose mother has been infected with HIV, is taking antiretroviral medications, has untreated, active tuberculosis, is infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I or type II, is using or dependent upon an illicit drug, is taking prescribed cancer chemotherapy agents that interfere with DNA replication and cell division, is undergoing radiation therapies (radiation therapy requires only a temporary interruption in breastfeeding)

Human milk is the preferred feeding for all infants, which includes premature and sick newborns with some rare exceptions. The final decision on breastfeeding an infant is the mother’s. It is the role of the pediatricians to provide parents with complete, current information on the benefits and methods of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding should begin as soon as possible after birth, usually within the first hour.

Newborns should nurse whenever they show signs of hunger, which include:

* Increased alertness or activity
* Mouthing
* Rooting

All the above signs will appear before crying. Crying is a late sign of infant hunger.

Newborns should nurse about 8 to 12 times every 24 hour period until satiety. This is usually accomplished within 10 to 15 minutes on each breast. If the infant is non-demanding in the early weeks after birth, they should be aroused or awakened to feed if 4 hours passes since last nursing.

Do not give supplements such as water, glucose water, formula and so forth to breastfeeding newborns unless advised by a health care professional due to some kind of medical indication. With adequate breastfeeding knowledge and practices, supplements are rarely needed. Pacifiers and supplements should be avoided and if used at all, only after breastfeeding is well established.

Newborns and breastfeeding mothers should be seen by a pediatrician or other knowledgeable health care professional when the newborn is 2 to 4 days of age. At that time, infant weight and a general health assessment should be done as well as observing breastfeeding for evidence of successful breastfeeding behavior. In addition the infant should be assessed for jaundice, adequate hydration and age-appropriate elimination patterns. The infant should have at least six urinations per day and three to four stools per day by 5 to 7 days of age.

Some obstacles to the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding include:

* Insufficient prenatal breastfeeding education
* Inappropriate interruption of breastfeeding
* Early hospital discharge in some populations
* Lack of timely routine follow-up care and postpartum home health visits
* Media portrayal of bottle-feeding as being “normal.”
* Commercial promotion of infant formula through hospital distributions of discharge packs, coupons for free or discounted formula, television and general magazine advertising

The highest rates of breastfeeding are among higher-income, college-educated women, 30 years of age living in the Mountain and Pacific regions of the United States.

The AAP strongly recommends breastfeeding as the ideal method of feeding and nurturing infants and recognizes breastfeeding as most important in achieving optimal infant and child health, growth and development.

Source: AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS

This article is FREE to publish with the resource box.

About The Author
Connie Limon, Trilogy Field Representative. Breastfeeding was not encouraged as it is in todays society. Doctors didn't fully grasp how important and beneficial it is for a newborn baby. Because of this, and a few other reasons, there were many new mothers that went directly to feeding with the bottle, most often new mothers didn't even try to breastfeed their new baby.

Breastfeeding helps protect and nurture your baby in innumerable ways. There have been many studies in regard to breastfeeding babies and the results have shown increases in brainpower within as little as six weeks of breastfeeding. The study has also shown a reduced risk of obesity due to the fact that breastfed babies are much less likely to overeat than formula-fed babies. Overall, babies that have been breastfed for roughly six months are also less likely to have breathing problems.

We now know how nourishing breast milk is for your baby. Breastfeeding is highly recommended by doctors as well as health care professionals. Further, it's been shown that breast milk supports brain function as stated above and also provides valuable nutrients that would not otherwise be available. Breast milk is very special, every mother's milk is slightly different, tailored to her own baby's needs. A baby's immune system is directly affected by the breast milk of his/her mother.

Every feeding time is an extremely important time of the day, it allows the mother and baby time to bond to each other without any distractions. A new mother will really get to know her baby by breastfeeding and will feel much more at ease with him or her during breastfeeding.

Milk induced sleep is one of the most wonderful things a mother will experience. Newborns love to be cuddled and they also love to eat. When you combine the two you get an extremely sleepy baby who will snuggle up in their mother's arms long after the feeding is over. Breastfeeding will instill a naptime but you'll find yourself continuing to rock your precious little one, it's calming to mother as well.

Babies have a built-in latching instinct, although some babies will not latch properly, causing pain to the mother. You'll detect these problems early on and you'll find that most hospitals have a nursing specialist that will help to determine if your baby is latching on wrong. If you continue to have problems in this area in the first week, you should consult with your doctor. With a little practice you'll be a pro in no time! Hang in there, It's worth it!

Breast milk is not only good for your baby, but it's also good for the mother as well. It has been stated that Mother's who breast-feed their babies for at least six months have shown a dramatical reduction in the risk of various types of cancer including breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Another happy note... through breast-feeding, new mother's will also lose the additional weight she gained while pregnant, and another benefit is that it will also help her uterus contract to its pre-baby size.

All new parents want to give their babies the very best and when it comes to nutrition, the very best "first food" for baby is breast milk.

Although you may experience a few challenges at first while breastfeeding; it will be the best experience a new mother will have. There may even come a time later in life when you look back on this wonderful experience and wish that you had breast fed your baby longer.

About The Author

Carlie Edwards is a successful business woman offering articles and useful information on a variety of Health and Beauty topics and issues. If your baby can be breast-fed for at least 6 months then the risk of allergies, such as eczema, are reduced, ear infections and stomach upsets are also reduced. Mother's milk seems to boost your baby's immune system generally.

How does breast milk do this?

Well breast-milk, unlike formula milk, contains antibodies designed to prevent an immature immune system from becoming overwhelmed with the foreign proteins that challenge it. Research has shown that exclusive breastfeeding for six months is associated with a reduced incidence of allergy and reduced risk of gastro-intestinal illness, respiratory illness, ear infections, diabetes, obesity and respiratory wheeze. So there are lots of benefits for your baby if you breast-feed.

According to the NCT nine out of ten mothers did not know that breastfeeding for just one month has a lasting impact on health during the first 14 years of a baby's life. All the authoritative expert bodies that advise on parenting are still right behind the message they've always endorsed: breastfeeding is definitely still the best. The longer the breastfeeding continues, the greater the health gains for both mother and baby.

Benefits for mums too?

Mothers are encouraged to breast-feed, though some women find that it can be embarrassing to do so in public places. Embarrassment aside there are benefits to mothers as well. Breastfeeding can lead to a more rapid return to your pre-pregnancy weight and also reduces the risk to mothers of pre-menopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

For some people breastfeeding can be a painful and upsetting experience.

It is a skill that both mothers and babies have to learn and it's not always easy to pick up. In fact, many women stop breastfeeding before they intended because it proves too difficult or because they are worried that their baby is not getting enough milk. New mums, in particular, can struggle with breastfeeding if they are not given the help and support they need.

The following are some of the common problems in breastfeeding and suggestions of how to help:

Painful breasts

There are three main causes of painful breasts.

1. A blocked milk tube can cause swelling and acute pain of the breast. It usually feels like a bruised lump and a red streak may radiate out from it.

2. Mastitis, an infection in the breast which causes pain and is usually accompanied by a fever and acute tenderness and redness of the breast. The infected breast may become hard, lumpy and swollen.

3. An oversupply of milk engorges the breast and usually causes some pain.

What can help these problems?

1. Blocked tube - If you have a blocked tube continue nursing as stopping can increase the discomfort and endanger the milk supply. Go carefully though and nurse or pump every hour - just enough to empty the breast. Get plenty of rest and the blockage will usually clear within a few hours or overnight.

2. Mastitis - Breast infections are almost always a sign of too little rest. It is important to nurse often, keeping the breasts empty to promote prompt healing. The infection itself will not make your baby sick. Take Echinacea to clear the infection. You should be able to purchase this in any reputable health food shop.

3. Oversupply of milk - Drink sage tea. Sage is an anti-galactagogue which means that it decreases the supply of milk. Sage tea will be available at health food shops.

Sore nipples

The most common cause of sore nipples is of course from your baby tugging at the nipple.

If however your nipples are persistently or suddenly sore you might have a thrush infection. Other symptoms of thrush are pink, flaky skin and itchy nipples. Stopping breast-feeding will not help the infection or sore nipples, in fact they are more likely to be helped by frequent nursing.

What helps?

Try not to wear a bra day and night. Wear your nursing bra with flaps down whenever possible - expose your breasts to the air, this helps.

Rub sweet almond oil or lanolin into the nipples during the latter part of the pregnancy and the first few weeks of breastfeeding.

Also rubbing calendula cream on the nipple will soothe and heal, just be sure to wipe off before breastfeeding. Pure vitamin E oil applied after nursing is very helpful - use pure Vitamin E. Avoid washing your nipples in soap as soap removes natural oils and can cause cracking.

Eat healthily. Remember whatever you are eating and drinking will have an immediate effect on your milk and therefore your baby.

Feed often so your baby doesn't get hungry and tear at the breast.

Relax! Soothing music played while you are breastfeeding will relax both yourself and your baby. By relaxing the flow of milk is better and obviously if your baby is calm rather than stressed the whole process is going to be gentler.

The right position

When your baby is feeding make sure that the entire areola (dark area) is in your baby's mouth and that the nipple is centred. Hold your baby in such a position that his or her nose is roughly opposite your nipple, before the feed begins. If you support your baby across the shoulders with your forearm or the heel of your hand, so that his/her head is free to extend backwards slightly then your baby can approach the underside of the breast, rather than coming straight at it.

You want your baby to open as wide as possible - try not to push the breast into your baby's mouth, it needs to be the other way around. Your baby's mouth will widen as it brushes the breast, just make sure that the lower lip is latched around the aerola. You might need to support your breast slightly, so that the position remains the same.

How will you know when it's right?

Your baby's sucking changes to a longer, slower, more rhythmic pattern with lots of long pauses. He or she may even doze off sometimes. Your baby will be relaxed throughout the feed and remain so for some minutes afterwards. You can be lying down as well as sitting for this process. A feed should not last more than 40 minutes at a time.

About The Author

Daphne Nancholas is a registered homeopath and for the past 10 years has specialised in the female cycle, including pregnancy, birth and babies. While the decision to breastfeed is a personal one, there are countless benefits for both mother and child that ought to be explored. One of the most significant reasons to breastfeed your child relates to the quality of food your child is ingesting. Although baby formula may meet the nutritional requirements of children, it is not the ideal food for babies.

According to the World Health Organization, Breastfeeding is the absolute best source of food for babies. Commercial baby formula is comprised of countless preservatives and by-products of other food production techniques that have no proven benefit for your child. Formula is also extremely high in fat content, and leads parent to believe that their child is thriving because he or she is gaining weight. This is not necessarily the case.

Breast milk, on the other hand, has undergone millions of years of development in the laboratory of Nature. Countless studies have proven that there is no reasonable substitute for Breast milk. Breast milk has the amazing ability to transform and adapt to the needs of your baby at various stages of development.

Colostrum is an amazing example of the way a woman's body produces the perfect food for baby. It is the first liquid produced by a mother, usually beginning a few months before delivery. It differs slightly in appearance than breast milk, in that it is thicker and has a yellowish tint. It has a high concentration of antibodies, which helps newborns fend off illness and disease and build strong, stable immune systems. It is extremely easy for babies to digest, and it also has a laxative effect to help ease digestion.

Studies have also shown that there is a direct relationship between breastfeeding and a child's cognitive ability and intelligence. Simply put, breastfed babies have higher IQ's than their bottle-fed peers. Some studies have concluded that the longer a child is breastfed, the higher IQ he/she will have. Other studies have shown that breastfed children have a lower incidence of ear infections. This is significant when one considers the overuse of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant disease.

Food allergies are another important consideration for new parents. Breastfed babies have a much lower chance of developing food life-threatening food allergies. As a consequence, the have an even lower chance of developing related illnesses such as gastrointestinal disorders, diarrhea and vomiting. Breast milk protects babies from food allergies because it has a high concentration of the immunoglobulin IgA. IgA works by binding to foreign proteins and preventing them from entering the child's bloodstream. Children do not begin to produce IgA of their own until approximately 8 months of age.

Other studies have concluded that breastfeeding can also protect your child from diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Leukemia. New parents should explore their options carefully, and make educated decisions regarding their child's health and well being. Speak with your Pediatrician, or contact your local health unit, for more information. The choice you make will affect your child's health for the rest of his or her life.

About The Author

Rachel Thompson is the proud mother of two young children, and a regular contributing writer for thebabydepartment.com – a wonderfully informative online resource for parents, with information about breastfeeding( http://www.thebabydepartment.com/feeding/breastfeeding.aspx ), car seats( http://www.thebabydepartment.com/travel/car-seats.aspx ), baby supplies( http://www.thebabydepartment.com/ ) and more.

Breastfeeding Problems - Mastits

by: Liz Picket

Mastitis

Women deciding to breastfeed anticipate that it will be a wonderful bonding experience for her and her baby. Nursing mothers all know that breast is best but what does she do about a case of mastitis?

Recognizing the problem

There are many warning signs and indicate that you may be coming down with mastitis.

1) An area on the breast becomes sore and red. The site of the clogged duct develops a very pronounced red spot which is extremely painful to the touch and holding or carrying your baby on this side may become unbearable. You may also see or feel a lump.

2) You may experience pain during nursing sessions. This may begin as a tingling sensation in the nipple. If there is no pain while the baby is nursing on that side, it does not mean that you don't in fact have mastitis.

3) Development of flu-like symptoms. You may experience a fever along with chills and body aches. Exhaustion is another common side effect. Many women report not even being able to get out of bed.

What to do if you suspect mastitis

At the first signs of developing mastitis:

1) Get into bed and rest! Even if you can just sit quietly for a few hours without doing anything such as housework or taking care of other children or family members, you'll benefit.

2) Apply warm compresses to the site of the clogged duct. Take a hot shower or even lower your breast into a bowl or pot filled with warm water and soak for a few minutes, several times an hour.

3) Nurse, nurse, nurse! Try to nurse the baby on the side of the clogged duct as often and as long as possible to work out the clog. Massaging the breast while the baby suckles may also help.

4) Remedies such as echinachea and vitamin C can be taken. Antibiotics may be prescribed by a physician or midwife as well.

How to avoid mastitis

Mastitis starts out as a plugged duct and develops into an infection. In order to avoid your ducts becoming clogged in the first place, it is a good idea not to constrict your milk ducts with underwire bras or tight fitting clothing. Try not to sleep on your stomach as this may also lead to a plugged duct. Avoid supplementing with bottles because this may lead to an overproduction of breast milk. When a feeding is missed, breasts may become engorged and ducts can get plugged up. Breast compression or breast massage before latching is also a helpful tool to avoiding clogged ducts all together.

About The Author

Liz Picket is a staff writer for www.nursing-mommy.com. Breast Feeding vs Formula. But why do most people say breast feeding is the best for your baby? Because this natural mother’s milk is genetically the best food for your baby. This is the way GOD designed for things to work.

Want a more scientific reason? Okay, for one, the complex fats that are abundant in human breastmilk are vital to brain development and may have an effect on your baby’s intelligence as they grow older.

Breastfed babies are ten times less likely to be hospitalized with gastro-enteritis in the early months than babies who are fed formula.

Breastfed babies also gain immunities from a host of other infections.

Here are some terms you may not already know. “Foremilk” – the thinner milk that first comes from the breast when you begin feeding your baby. This is for quenching the baby’s initial thirst. “Hindmilk” – is the milk that comes later during the feeding of your baby. The hindmilk is much more filling and contains all the nutrients your baby needs to stay healthy.

Breastfed babies rarely need other drinks and supplements, because their mother has already given them what nature intended for them to have and need.

What’s in it for me as a Mom? There is nothing to compare the bonding and closeness with your baby that is caused by your choice to breastfeed. It is a great feeling to know that you are doing what is best for your baby.

Babies need to be close to their mothers. They need physical contact. Breastfeeding is one of the best types of physical contact you can have with your baby.

It’s also a whole lot easier than bottle-feeding! No feeds to mix, no bottles to warm or sterilize. Your breastmilk is always available, already sterile, and already just the right temperature for your baby.

Here is a real favorite among all women who breastfeed. Many women lose weight more easily after the birth if they choose breastfeeding over bottle feeding.

Another big issue is that there is evidence that breastfeeding reduces your risk for breast cancer.

What if I am having problems breastfeeding? Either your pediatrician can help you or there are breastfeeding counselors you can find in your area or online that can help you with any problems you may have.

If you have sore nipples or your baby isn’t getting enough milk, it may be your positioning. Your baby’s mouth should cover all of the areola, especially the part just under the areola. Sucking on just the nipple will keep the baby from getting enough milk and will make your nipples very sore.

Can I give my baby a bottle at times and breastfeed at other times? It’s not recommended. Bottle nipples are easier for the baby to suck on and they will obtain bad breastfeeding technique which in turn will cause them to be less hungry or not get enough milk from breastfeeding.

About The Author

Robin Darch, of PRT Specialised Services Limited has a website, http://www.babyport.info to help parents find all the information they need about babies, baby names, baby showers, baby gifts, products for babies, baby clothing, and more. Having a new baby is hard enough but when you choose to breastfeed you sometimes feel that you made this experience even harder. Breastfeeding is not as difficult as it looks or as you may have heard from others. It is actually pretty easy and a very fulfilling way to nourish your newborn once you get the hang of it. Remember as with most things practice makes perfect! Breastfeeding is new to you and to your little one but with a little practice you two will become pros in no time!

During the first week of your baby’s life, your breasts will produce colostrum for your baby to drink. Colostrum is rich in antibodies and aids the baby’s immune system. It also helps him pass his first bowel movement, which is called meconium. Meconium is black and tarry looking and is in the first few diapers after birth. Then he begins to transition to a brown substance and after your milk comes in, it becomes a yellow, mustardy stool that is loose and watery. Bottle-fed babies pass firmer, tannish stools than breastfed babies.

After 24-48 hours after birth, your baby will start having wet diapers that will increase to two or three a day.

Your technique and positioning is a very important factor in ensuring that your breastfeeding experience is a great one. There are a few different positions that can be used to make the experience more comfortable for you and baby. Some of these positions include:

• Laying down - Lay down on you side with pillows behind you to support your back. Lay baby facing you with her head on a pillow your breast should be level with baby’s mouth. Bend your legs with a pillow between your knees and then have baby latch on.

• Sitting Up – Sit up either in bed or a comfortable chair or couch with pillows supporting your back and head. Place a pillow on your lap and put baby on top of the pillow in your arms, you can rest your arms on the pillow to make it easier to bring baby up to your breast. Bend your knees to make this even easier have baby latch on.

• The Clutch Hold – This is also known as the football hold. This position is also good when nursing twins as it allows mom to have a baby on each side. Sit down and tuck your baby under your arm almost like a handbag. Rest baby’s head on a firm pillow on your lap. Ensure that baby’s feet are behind your back. Your hand is at the back of baby’s neck, not on baby’s head. Your arm will extend down baby’s back , guide baby to latch on

These are just a few of the positions that you can use there is also the cradle hold, clutch hold, and the transition position. Do some research to learn these other positions to nurse your baby if you find the above positions uncomfortable.

While your baby drinks colostrum and then milk, you should listen for a pattern of “suck, suck, suck, swallow.” This pattern will be rhythmic and there should be no “clicking” noises. The “clicking” sound can indicate that your baby is not properly latched on and may not be getting enough milk from you. If you start to hear this, you need to unlatch him and then reattach him. If you continue to hear this sound after reattaching him several times, then you may want to consult a lactation consultant or your pediatrician.

After the first week of life, you should see 6-8 wet diapers each day and at least 3 bowel movements a day. His urine should be clear and he should become more alert with each passing day. Your baby should also be gaining weight and growing, as this is the surest way to tell that they are getting enough nutrition. If you have two days in a row that deviates from the above indicators, then you should call your pediatrician immediately.

Breastfeeding problems, such as milk production difficulties, are not as common when using the PDF feeding method, but they do occur. Even if you are well rested, eating healthy, have a pretty routine life, and your baby is growing and getting enough food, you still may experience a milk production issue. Many things can cause production problems. Here are just a few.

Some things that can affect your milk supply are:

• What mom eats
• How much mom rests and sleeps
• Her state of mind
• The age of the mom
• How many children you have
• Your desire to breastfeed
• Your nursing capabilities
• Your nursing techniques
• Baby’s latch on abilities

If you choose to breastfeed, it is very important that you take your baby for their check-ups as needed. If you don’t, how will you know if he is getting enough milk and growing at the correct rate? There is no way for you to tell that your child is getting enough nutrition for sure without your child being weighed.

If you need any additional help you can contact the La Leche League International by telephone at (800) LALECHE (525-3243).

About The Author

Melida Cohen is author of "Baby's First Year: Everything You Should Know but probably don't," She is a mother to 3 children. You may not know exactly what to do or how to do it. Hopefully these breastfeeding tips will help to get you started.

* Start Early - It is good to begin breastfeeding within an hour after birth if possible, when the baby is alert and the instinct to suck is strong. Although you will not yet be producing milk, your breasts contain colostrum, a thin milky fluid that contains important antibodies to disease.

* Feed Frequently - You should try breastfeeding your baby at least every two to three hours. This will help to keep your breasts soft and lessen or even prevent engorgement. Watch for signs that your baby is hungry, such as changes in facial expressions, sucking sounds or lip movements, and rapid eye movement or restlessness during light naps. If you keep an eye out for these signs, you can learn to anticipate your baby's hunger. Breastfeeding on cue will help stimulate your breasts to produce more milk.

* Good Positioning - Having the right positioning for breastfeeding will play a major role in reducing nipple soreness. Use you hand to support the baby's neck. The baby's mouth should be open wide with the lips puckered out like "fish lips", not folded in. The nipple should go back as far into his or her mouth as possible. If you need help finding the proper positioning, ask a nurse, midwife, or other experienced mother for some help breastfeeding.

* Nipple Upkeep - When you first begin breastfeeding your nipples may become very sore. After each breastfeeding session rub a small amount of breast milk on and around each nipple and allow it to air dry. This will help to prevent cracking which can lead to infection. In cases where your nipples do crack, coat them with breast milk, vitamin E oil, or lanolin to help them heal. Be aware that some babies may have an allergic reaction to certain moisturizing agents. Proper positioning while breastfeeding is very important to avoid sore nipples.

* Look Out for Breast Infection - If you experience a fever or painful lumps and redness in your breasts, you should seek medical attention immediately.

* Postpone Using Artificial Nipples - If you are going to be breastfeeding your baby, avoid introducing pacifiers or other artificial nipples too early. Artificial nipples require a different sucking action than the real thing and it can be easy for the baby to become confused. Try to wait until after a couple weeks of breastfeeding before introducing any sort of fake nipples.

* No Supplements Needed - There is no need to supplement breastfeeding with sugar water or formula. Neither of these come close to comparing with the nutritional complexity of your breast milk, and they may interfere with the baby's appetite for breastfeeding and lead to a diminished milk supply. Breastfeeding your baby more often will in turn cause you to produce more milk.

* Engorgement - When you first begin breastfeeding, you will be producing a lot of milk, which can make you breasts big, hard, and painful. You can help to ease this engorgement by breastfeeding frequently until your body adjusts to produce only as much as the baby needs. While your body adjusts, you can help to relieve the pain by applying warm, wet compresses or taking warm baths. Some over-the-counter pain relievers will help, but consult your doctor before taking any sort of drug, since it may be passed through your milk to the baby.

* Stay Healthy - A mother who is breastfeeding needs to eat a healthy diet in order to produce enough good milk. You should try and get an extra 500 calories a day, drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluids, and avoid drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and smoke. You should also rest as much as possible while breastfeeding, since breast infections are aggravated by fatigue.

About The Author

Susan Tanner is a wife and mother of three. The decision to breast-feed is entirely up to you and each woman should make up her own mind, it is an individual choice.

There are a number of reasons why a mother would decide not to breastfeed, including infection e.g. hepatitis or HIV this can be passed onto the baby through the breast milk, or if the mother is on long-term medication for an illness, in this situation it is advised to bottle feed instead. Some mothers can’t produce enough milk and others just do not like the idea at all, either way it’s a personal decision.

In the 40s and 50s it was very unfashionable to breastfeed and mothers were encouraged to bottle-feed. It’s a different story now days with our health conscious society, more and more mothers are deciding that for them and their infant’s breast is best. Breastfeeding benefits not only the child but the mother also.

It is the baby’s natural food and is easily digested limiting stomach problems and wind causing pain and discomfort to the baby. It is also provides antibodies reducing the risks of gastro-intestinal infections, urine infections, chest and ear it infections, breathing difficulties including asthma, diabetes, eczema and childhood obesity.

There are also lots of benefits to the mother for breastfeeding including a close maternal bond between you and your baby, a reduced risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. Breastfeeding also helps the womb to contract back to its normal size much quicker than if you were not breastfeeding.

You need to keep in mind that when you are breast-feeding it is not safe to take the combined pill but you can take the mini pill for this duration, this of course dispels the myth that you cannot get pregnant during breastfeeding you definitely can. Another positive note is that breastfeeding aids in the loss of the body’s fat stores that were stored in preparation for breastfeeding, this will speed up loosing the pregnancy weight.

Although keep in mind that eating a well balance diet with daily vitamins and minerals is fundamental for producing high quality milk for your baby, this is not the time for any crash diets.

One of the big concerns for mothers when breast feeding is that they are unsure of the amounts of food the baby is consuming, once the baby is breastfeeding well and he or she is having wet and dirty nappies be assured all is well. Your midwife or maybe friends and family can help and advise when you are going through those anxious few weeks of breastfeeding, there are also breast feeding support groups that you can go along to and speak to other mums with the same problems or concerns as you.

Another concern for mothers is breast-feeding in public, most people are okay with breastfeeding in front of friends and family but the thought of breastfeeding in public makes them a little nervous. Do not let this put you off, if you and your baby are comfortable with it that’s all that matters. There is always a discrete table you can sit at in a restaurant and or on the train and there is always the option of planning your outings around feed times to avoid it completely.

When you decide the time is right to wean your baby onto bottles and get some routine back into your life you need to decide if you will be expressing your own milk or using formula.

Expressing is said to be a difficult and tricky task that takes a bit of time and patients, however if you decide to go down this route you can build up a store of breast milk and freeze it in specially adapted freezer bags. Breast milk can last up to six months in the freezer. This way you can be more flexible with your time and your baby gets all the goodness of breast milk.

Although a lot of women actually want their breasts back and to feel it’s their body once again so they go with formula. Bottle feeding using formula is not a bad idea as you can stop worrying about those embarrassing wet patches and get back into your pretty smaller size bras again.

Not all women want to or can breast feed but I think you should give it a go. It is a wonderful bonding experience for both mother and child providing a lot of health benefits, its extremely rewarding all round.

About The Author

Declan Tobin is a successful freelance writer providing advice for parents and consumers on purchasing a variety of baby products which includes baby crib bedding, strollers, and more! In the first stages of our life, the skin is very delicate, fragile and thin. Baby’s skin is different in functions and structure than the skin of an adult. It has high water content, allows low sweat production and the protection through sebum is almost inexistent.

The babies are very sensitive to temperature changes, unsuitable humidity or harmful and irritating substances. Consider using natural baby skin care products as they are more gentle for your baby's skin. But before you flash out your money, try to compare prices for natural baby skin care and shop around for the best deals first.

Lotions and oils?

Contrary to popular thought, the babies do not need lotions unless their skin is dry. Oils and lotions will not allow your baby’s skin to sweat and can cause a rash or an allergic reaction. Powders should be avoided not only for the effect they have on the skin. Their tiny particles can provoke breathing troubles. If you have to use a powder put it in your hand and then apply it to the baby's skin.

Massage

Babies enjoy being massage. In fact is a very important part of their growth. For you baby’s skin the benefits are huge. The massage stimulates circulation, immune system and tactile sense. Use baby massage oil but pour it onto your palms. Be careful with the room’s temperature (78 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity.

Bathing

Proper bathing and skin care will maintain the baby’s delicate skin healthy. Newborns don’t need bathing very often (2-4 times a week). Their skin can’t get very dirty if you change their diapers frequently.Sponge baths are required at first. Until the baby's umbilical cord falls off, this area should be avoided to prevent infections. Use only cotton wool or soft washcloths and baby soap/shampoo. Products for adults may contain irritant substances or allergens.

Diaper rash

The soap you use, some brands of disposable diapers or simply dirty diapers can cause skin irritations. Most diaper rashes are provoked by skin irritations. The best way to treat this “disease” is to clean well the area and to let the skin get some air. You should also change the diapers often and use ointments with zinc oxide.

Baby Acne

Acne is very common among newborns. Usually it shows up after 2 or 3 weeks after birth and is present on cheeks, forehead and chin. Baby acne usually clears up on its own, but most parents make the mistake to use oil or lotions. All you need to do is gently cleanse the affected areas with water once a day. You can also use soft blue light when your baby is sleeping as a treatment.

Sun: friend or foe?

While our bodies produce vitamin D when the skin is touched by sunlight, to much exposure can cause sun burns. Baby’s skin is very sensitive and babies under six months should spend very little time under direct sunlight. However, you should not keep your child locked inside the house. Use sun hats, sunglasses and protective clothing.

Your baby’s skin is very sensitive and delicate. we hope that the above natural baby skin care tips can help you to protect your baby's skin better.

About The Author

Jerrick Foo has been researching and developing all dry skin care the purpose of offering men and women safe, dry skin care tips. Your childcare provider will be spending a lot of time with your child, so it is critical that you be comfortable with the environment and the style of care your child will be receiving. There are several alternatives, each with pros and cons. Spend some time evaluating each option, so that you can make the choice that best suits your needs.

The first option is in-home child care, meaning a sitter, or nanny who comes to your home to watch the child. This is by far the most expensive option, but it has many advantages. Your child will be at home, and will have the full attention of the nanny. In addition, your child will be exposed to fewer illnesses, and you will not have to transport her back and forth on your way to and from work. The main disadvantage is that you have no real backup if your nanny gets sick or wants to take vacation. Another thing to consider is your feelings if your child develops a very strong bond with the nanny. More than one mother has been hurt by the sense that the baby is more comfortable with the nanny than with her.

The second option is a small home daycare, meaning you find someone who will keep your child in her home, perhaps with her own children or one or two others. This is a good option if you want your child in a home atmosphere, but can’t afford the full time nanny. This option shares the same disadvantages of having a nanny in terms of no backup plan.

The third option is a traditional daycare center. Traditional daycares are affordable, and there is no need to worry about a caretaker getting sick or wanting to take vacation. A daycare might also be more of a learning environment than home care, which will become more important to you as your child gets older. The main disadvantages of daycares are that your child is exposed to all the germs of all the children. Be prepared for the both of you to be sick for a year. The other disadvantage is the numbers of children being cared for. For example, in most states, the law requires one caretaker per eight babies. Now, I don’t know about you, but I could not effectively care for eight babies alone. So, if you decide to use a daycare center, be sure to ask their caretaker to child ratio. Look for one with about five babies per caretaker.

Choosing your baby’s childcare arrangement is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Even after you’ve chosen a care option, be diligent about ensuring that your child is receiving the best care. Drop in unannounced at odd times of day to see what’s going on. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and let the caretaker know what’s important to you. It’s critical not only to your child’s well being, but to your own piece of mind.

About The Author

Sarah Veda is a 41 year old wife and mother of two boys and one girl. Unfortunately, newborns do not come with an instruction book so here are a few topics that you may need to know about.

Bathing your baby: Until your baby’s umbilical cord falls off one to two weeks after their birth, only give her sponge baths. A cotton ball or cotton swab dampened with alcohol can help to dry the umbilical stump or follow your pediatrician’s directions. After the stump falls off, you can give him a bath in a sink or shallow tub.

Caesarian delivery: A caesarian is usually performed to make delivery safer for you or your baby. C-sections can be done for many different reasons including stalled labor, complicated labor, problems with the baby that may make delivery difficult, or other problems. It does not matter if you deliver vaginally or by a caesarian section, you are still a mother with a beautiful new blessing.

Circumcision: Many doctors agree that there may be some benefit to circumcision, but it may not be absolutely necessary. It may help to lower the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer. Circumcision does not cause long-term emotional problems for your child.

Crib death (SIDS): Many studies have been done regarding SIDS. Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:

Male babies are more likely to die from SIDS than females

Prematurity makes it more likely

Minority children are affected by it more often than non-minorities

More children of young, single mothers die from it

Children who live in a home with one or more smokers are more likely to be affected

Some people say that sleeping with your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagree with this statement and go on to say that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who co-sleep.

Back sleeping is what most pediatricians recommend for babies to decrease the SIDS risk. The reason for this is widely debated between health experts. If you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician.

About The Author

Melida Cohen is author of "Baby's First Year: Everything You Should Know but probably don't," She is a mother to 3 children.

Melida Cohen is wife, and mother of 3 beautiful children ages, 1, 7, and 8. It is one of the best teaching methods. However at every stage, a child needs newer forms of play to stimulate his interest. What is interesting for a six month old won't surely be that interesting for a two year old. You can't expect your two year old to feel excited just by watching some colorful object- which would actually be very interesting for a six month old baby. As your baby grows, he not only outgrows certain toys and games- his preferences also changes. So what exactly can be/constitute interesting and appropriate play for a two year old? Read on to get some ideas.

By the time your baby is two, games which involve shapes, sizes or colors would make up for interesting play. This is a good time to introduce her to different shapes like rectangles, squares, triangles etc. You can give her an assorted jumble of toys or objects of different shapes- for e.g. two triangular objects, three circular ones and four rectangular toys. Then tell her to put the similar shapes in one stack from the assorted shapes. Show her how she can do it. This kind of a game can be very stimulating for her. Also, she would learn the concept of shapes through this game. So it can be a very educational game at the same time. This could be her lesson in geometry! You can make her play similar games involving colors or sizes.

The ‘Stack and Store' kind of game also proves to be fun. Put an entire jamboree of goodies in a container- it would be fascinating for her to take them out and put them in again. This would also be the first step towards teaching her to keep her toys in order and organized!

Toys which toddlers can rock, push or ride would also prove to be fun.

The high chair can be used as a prop for a very interesting game. Strap your baby carefully in the high chair- then place a basket in front and give him some soft balls. Tell him to throw the balls in the basket- sit back and see her aim getting better!

The list of fun games is endless. But remember, at this age babies are like sponges- they absorb everything taught to them. So try to imbibe some qualities in the games that are educational and contribute to their learning process. Nothing makes learning as much fun as playing!

-------

About the Author:
Samantha Delaney is the editor of http://www.babylife.org/

Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - Play at Two!

Toy Joy

One of the major activities through which babies learn and understand about themselves and the world in general is- Play. It is a very important part of childhood. It is not only about fun but equally about sensory-motor development and increase in awareness. Children usually have an inborn tendency when it comes to play. It comes naturally to them just like eating or breathing. It is very instinctive. However "playtime" can be even more fun when you involve toys in the picture. But remember- all toys are not suited for every age group. Some can be tedious or hazardous for little ones. You should keep in mind your baby's interest, age and ability while choosing some toy.

All this said, let's go the main point. What are some of the toys which will interest a bambino less than 1 year of age? (Obviously, they can't play twister at one however fun it is!) Read on to get some ideas...

A baby till three-five months of age is quite happy just by looking at bright colors. Play for a baby under 1 year of age is usually about absorbing the sights and sounds around her. Therefore a simple thing like a cell phone or a bright colored toy hung over her cradle would make the perfect plaything. And if the toy happens to be a musical one then there's nothing like it (however be sure to strap it tightly to the cradle and see that it's lightweight for obvious safety reasons). Her attention will be fixed on this play thing for a long duration (giving you ample time to put on that face mask or read the latest best seller). Teething rings (which are found in various forms like keys, fruits etc) are also a good idea and at the same time your baby gets to exercise her jaws and gums. This age is also the ideal time to introduce toys that can be operated by her. Little toy cars, rattles, clockwork toys (these have to be operated by you), even bright colored objects which are not necessarily toys- make ideal playthings. Rubber toys which make squeaky noises on being pressed can also provide a lot of entertainment. The list is endless- every mall worth its name stocks toys aiming specific age groups.

However there are some toys which should not be introduced. The list is long, but to give a basic idea- toys which are breakable, detachable, dolls with synthetic hair should be kept away as some of the detachable parts or the synthetic hair could end up in your baby's mouth and choke her. Breakable pieces could also get embedded in her skin and hurt her. Toys which are very small in size should also be kept away. When buying a toy for your 1 year old, make sure there's a non-toxic stamp at the back of the packaging (usually toys carry this stamp). If it is mentioned at the back that the toy is not suitable for children under 3- Don't buy it! Stay away from big woolly teddies- however cute they may look to you...your baby could get scared of them!

So have a good time picking up the perfect toys for your baby.

For similar articles or information regarding pregnancy, parenting or baby care check http://www.babylife.org/

----------

About the Author:
Samantha Delaney is the editor of http://www.babylife.org/

Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - Toy Joy

How To Find The Right Baby Care Products For Your Baby

You have just had a baby, and although you got many lovely baby care products at your baby shower, you would like to add to the collection some of your own preferred baby care products. However, there are many baby care products on the market, so how do you go about find the right ones?

About Baby Care Products

Now, when it comes to buying baby care products, many parents really go out of their way to find the best that money can, and in the process put a considerable dent on their budget. Remember that baby care products really should only have one function, and that is to help in taking care of the baby.

Despite that fact, many parents will buy many different baby care products regardless of the cost because they think that they higher the price, the more dependable the product. This is not always true, so as a parent be sure not to fall into that trap.

Babies basically need several things: food, diapers, clothes, a car seat, a high chair, a changing table, and a crib. Of course babies have no concept of what these things are, but they depend on those things anyway. It is up to you as the parent to choose the best ones.

For a new baby, food will basically consist of either formula milk or breast milk. If you have chosen to use formula milk, be sure that it has all of the proper nutrients needed for the baby's health. Also, be sure that it is safely packaged.

When it comes to diapers, choose the biodegradable kind. Your baby will go through hundreds of diapers in its lifetime, and regular brand name diapers are not as easy to dispose of when it comes to being environmentally conscious. Also, be sure that the diapers are the right fit for the baby. The diaper should fit snugly, but not be too loose either.

As with baby care in general, finding the right baby care products is a learning process. Ask family and friends what they would recommend. Also, check online for user reviews of products that you have been thinking about purchasing. These sites might also tell you where and how to find them for the best price. With the proper research, you are sure to find the right baby care products.
-----
Ann Marier has written many articles on health problems and useful house and garden Topics. The pacifier is a good way to stop a baby from crying, as for the baby it simulates the experience of nursing. However, when the baby starts getting older it is a good idea to start weaning the baby away from using a pacifier, in order to decrease the risk of dependency.

Another popular babycare accessory is the baby blanket. These allow for safe and hygienic disposal of diapers, with no smell. Where you choose to place the diaper genie is, of course, up to you, but a popular place is right next to the baby's changing table.

There are many places you can look to find babycare accessories. Television influences the visual stimuli and since the children are not born with a preference for salty or overly sweet foods, they have to acquire a taste for them. Despite attempts to provide 3 nutritional meals a day, who says they will eat it. Kids are finicky and won't sit still even though, the food is prepared with the best of intentions.

Now Foods has complete Vitamins and Minerals in Orange Splash and Berry Chewables.
Child Life Essentials has a great tasting Vitamin and Mineral in 8 oz liquid. Chewables and Liquids have come a long way since first introduced in the 60's (I was there). Yummi Bears by Hero Nutritional Products has Whole Food Nutrients in a value size, so if you have several little ones, this has 200 Bears with certified organic veggies and fruits, all the good ones, even brussel sprouts, cabbage and spinach, various berries too. For the older ones that can swallow, they also have a Vegetable And Fruit Blend in caps that have an enormous array of nutrients including Green Tea, Digestive Enzymes etc. Of course breast milk is the very best for infants, however your Doctor might even suggest a multi in liquid for little ones. I find prescription ones not entirely full of the right nutrients, and may also have other ingredients from the pharmaceutical companies, that may not sit well with a parent, who would like a more wholesome multi. Country Life has Maxi Babycare with iron in a Raspberry flavor, with all the essentials including Vitamin K for bone development. Twinlab has Infant Care, fruit flavored with Fish Liver and Cod Liver Oil. Bringing up baby means a lot of diapers. With all the new kinds of diapers out in the market including the plastic ones, California Baby has a Calm Diaper Cream, with food grade nutrients from Zinc, Tea Tree and Aloe, with an Essential Oil Blend. Boiron Homeopathics has Calendula Ointment to sooth sore tuchies. California Baby has a Bubble Bath for the sensitive ones, this should be for all young ones, so they don't have to deal with artificial ingredients and the bad stuff from other sources. It comes unscented in 13 ozs and no irritation. They specialize in chemical sensitive children, and have quite a range of products. Now, you pre -moms, that needs some help with nausea and feeling icky. Babys Bliss has a Peach and Ginger flavored Liquid, supporting those endearing moments. It is the best to feed your own milk to the child. Please do not forget to give her the first milk of yours because that would contain colostrums, which is vital for the immune system of the child. Mother's milk will always create the body resistance and the child will be a healthy one in future.

When you are breast feeding your child, the food that causes problems in your body may be communicated to the baby as well. Foods that cause gas or cold should be avoided or the baby will have uncomfortable state or congestion.

Bottle feeding

If you are bottle-feeding your baby for some reasons, then make sure that the bottles are well sterilized and clean. Scrub them with washing liquids. Boil them for 25 minutes to kill unwanted organism that may have developed in it due to the fermenting milk. Steam sterilizer and cold sterilizer methods are also there, about which one has to consult with an expert and should see to it that those are readily available in the market.

Baby sleeping

The materials needed to put the baby to sleep are a good, firm mattress, sheets and blankets. Keep one feet distance from the nostril range of the baby if you are lying along with your baby on the same bed. There should not be unnecessary clothing or clothes around the baby's body and bed which may cause temperature rise and heating. The baby is not going to talk about it, and you should be sensitive enough to remove the body coverings as much as possible. There should be a mosquito net, or at least a netted covering around the baby to keep away the flies and the mosquitoes.

Clothing

Summer clothes should be light cotton ones. When the baby is taken out, make sure that his head does not get the direct sun. In winter, there may be sweaters, trousers and other woolens.

Changing

The baby's diapers should be regularly changed. The intervals should be fixed according to the baby's routine of potting and wetting. Despite the routine, the baby may need changing because of untimely nature calls at times. It is the baby's right to feel dry at every moment. See to it that the bed is not wetted and the smelly clothes and bed sheets are removed.

Bathing

The baby needs a mouth washing with cotton. A bath tub large enough to hold it and is easy to wash should be made available. The baby should enjoy the water which can be assessed if leg splashing which is very distinct. The baby should be rubbed with baby oil and baby cream. The nail clippers should be used at bath time. After bath, the baby should be thoroughly dried and should be applied with a baby powder.

Immunisation

The baby should be immunized against Small Pox & Measles with BCG within 3 months of its age. The first DPT (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Psertussis, Polio, HIB, Meningitis C) is due within the first 2 months followed by the 2nd and the 3rd one at one month intervals. The MMR vaccination against Measles, Mumps and Rubella should be done within 1 years of age. The boosters should be taken after the baby is 4 years old.

Training and Education

Though regular training and teaching should not be started before the age of three years, the child's habits and sense of discipline is cultivated through the discipline the mother maintains. When the mother is calm against odds like the baby fever, or baby dysentery while making sure of the treatments, the child gets the idea to be calm against disastrous times.

The most important babycare tip

The parents should find enough time to spend with the baby.

------------
About the Author:

Tania writes on baby care and baby items, pregnancy week by week and beauty tips.

Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - Baby Care Tips
